Yuuta Togashi is a high school freshman who chose a new school far away from his middle school, due to his mortifying past there. Yuuta was what people would classify as a chuunibyou—a 'disease' that causes people to fantasize about themselves and their surroundings—with him using the alias of 'Dark Flame Master.' He enters high school looking to start anew or, at least, that is what he hoped for.
Everything had been going smoothly, and Yuuta was relishing the feeling of a normal high school life until he met Rikka Takanashi—who despite being a high schooler, is still a chuunibyou—subsequently crumbling Yuuta's short-lived regular high school experience. It would seem that his chuunibyou past is not leaving him just yet.
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! follows Yuuta and Rikka's relationship as they experience an eccentric high school journey, with chuunibyou constantly haunting Yuuta.

This novel was very good up until the last novel.
I have only read it up until the 4th novel up until the 5th chapter since I do not have the Japanese novel and I am only reading an online translation that is still being translated, therefore my opinion will be based on that.
I love this novel a lot, the story was very nice and I love the idea of it.. But, when Kyoto animation made the anime they changed the story completely.
Then the story started going downhill around Novel 3, but it was still okay.
My idea of it is that Torako did that because of the anime's story and the anime being praised more. Therefore they tried to adhere to the anime's story, but that didn't work, because the story is nothing like the anime.
Their story was better than the anime, so it is upsetting to see them doing this.
The novel is still better than the anime by far, but the 1st novel and 2nd novel are the best, because they were not influenced by the anime adaptation. (Since the anime hadn't come out until the 2nd novel was made?)
Dekomori seems very very very forced in the novel, which Torako said in the afterword of the 3rd novel, 'Deko-chan’s appearance was quite forced though…'
Online, I see so many people say that they think the novel is bad because Dekomori isn't there, or Kumin, or Tooka.
Imagine being told that a horrible adaptation of your novel is better because they had 3 other characters added that were completely useless to the story. That's horrible.
His adaptation of Kumin was good in my opinion, but Dekomori was quite annoying. I might have a 'biased' opinion on Dekomori, since I hate her in the anime too, and she hates Yuuta, which is my favorite character. But her personality is overall annoying.
I barely have any complaints for the 1st or 2nd novel. They were outstanding.

First thing for those who watched the anime before: Novel story is completely different from the anime.
Rikka and Yuuta are a pair of chuuni and ex-chuuni. Some background stories about them are different but some are same.
The story took us to Yuuta's school life and how he got involved with Rikka through daily encounters. The story is in Yuuta's first person POV focused on how they met, interact every day in school, and finally became a lover. The story is quite straightforward without many sudden plot twists.
Sadly, there are very few illustrations so it quite hard to grasp the story visually. It's up to your imagination how they are doing things. But the splash images isn't disappointing at all.
We can see in Yuuta's POV how he doing every day and how he feel about every encounters. Character developments aren't drastic ones, as there are no very eventful conflics.
The main attraction of the characters I guess if from how the people interact with a chuunibyou girl who see the world from a different perspective and how cute she is.
I found it very enjoyable because it's very relatable. It just like we experience how we met and fell in love with someone, in this case a chuuni girl.
We'll see how a pair of chuuni found each other, involved with each other, fell to each other, how they spend time as a couple with their own way, and how they resolve their problems as a couple.

A highly acclaimed series, Kyoto Animation did a splendid job on animating Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai. The series strayed away from the typical slice-of-life romance by involving school kids with dark pasts they want to keep secret: the cursed days when they were infected by the eighth grade syndrome, also known as chuunibyou. However, the original light novel series that made the anime possible is often overlooked.
Written by Torako, the story of Yuuta and Rikka spans just only two volumes. What must also be taken into account is that a number of characters from the anime does not exist in the original text including the twin tailed Sanae Dekomori, Rikka’s older sister Touka Takanashi, and the sleepy Kumin Tsuyuri. However, the absence of such characters does not mean the story is more boring; instead, it allows for more room to focus on the relationship between ex-chuunibyou patient Yuuta Togashi and current chuunibyou patient Rikka Takanashi.
Each chapter separates a series of events. For example, one chapter may be about Yuuta visiting Rikka’s house, and the next would be a school field trip. Plot-wise, there is nothing much other than the adventures the couple have together. Volume one tells how the two classmates eventually become lovers. Volume two, however, introduces a new love rival that tests how serious Yuuta and Rikka are for one another. Overall, the plot was average but nicely executed. The story was clear to the reader, and there were a few unpredictable plot twists.
Even for a light novel, there was a lack of illustrations that would help portray the story. However, the art did provide clear visuals on the characters’ appearances. And like most light novel illustrations, the art was beautifully drawn. Emotions were clearly expressed and color tones and shadings were of top quality. Though he is not known to many, Nozomi Osaka did a great job of illustrating the world of Chuunibyou.
In terms of how well Torako portrayed the characters in the series, he did an outstanding job. The main character Yuuta is clearly seen as a somewhat feminine male lead who struggles to lead a normal life yet is tempted to revert back to his past chuunibyou self. Rikka is known for her delusional antics and her undying devotion to Yuuta. The popular Shinka Nibutani regrets her chuunibyou past and currently lives her school life as a dance club team member and class representative. Her friend Kazari Kannagi is also popular, second only to Shinka and a great support for Yuuta when he is troubled. Makoto Issiki is seen as a pervert with a pure heart and Yuuta’s childhood friend Satone Shichimiya is a self-aware chuunibyou patient who is in love with her “Hero.”
Overall, it was a great read. Though it was not an exceptional piece of work, it is a series that should be eventually read, especially when one is already familiar with the anime adaption. Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai is different from many popular light novel series that have badass or infallible main leads. Yuuta has flaws he must overcome, fears he must get rid of, and a love he must requite. The chronicles of the Dark Flame Master is not just about action, it is also about acting. Acting on one’s feelings for another and signing a contract to be together forever.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! takes plentiful influence from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu. However, it twists that show's formulas in new ways to create an original comedy/drama anime with profound takes on escapism and teenage embarrassment.
